eSpa Models

When it comes to the eSpa pre-built PCBs, there are two variants available – the eSpa Mini and the eSpa Max. This page covers what is similar, and what is different between them.

Similarities

Both models share many similarities:

  • Powered by an ESP32-S3-Mini with 8MB of flash.
  • Built-in WiFi and Bluetooth support (but the current firmware does not make any use of the Bluetooth functionality).
  • No need for a separate power supply – power is supplied via the RJ-45 connection when connected to the spa pool controller.
  • USB-C connector for easy flashing and debugging.
  • GPIO connectivity for connecting external devices and sensors.
  • Safety fuse to reduce risk of damage to spa pool controller board.
  • Same firmware for both devices!
  • Four status LEDs for diagnosing issues.

Differences

The eSpa Mini provides the core set of functionality for integrating your spa pool into your home automation system, and aims to do so in the smallest form factor possible.

The eSpa Max provides additional functionality:

  • Two RJ-45 connectors, to allow for connecting to your spa pool controller, as well as loop-back support for connecting to health lighting, etc on the spa pool itself.
  • A 3.5mm connector for a CT clamp, to allow for you to measure real-time power consumption of your spa pool.
  • An external WiFi antenna, to allow for longer range connections between your spa pool and your home WiFi network.

If any of the above functionality appeals to you, then you should consider the eSpa Max, otherwise you may find that everything you need is available in the cheaper, and smaller, eSpa Mini.
